Botanical still lifes
Julia Carol is an embroidery artist who creates still-life thread paintings. Like most still-life practices, her art romanticizes the everyday. It is beauty in stillness. The technique also speaks of time and craft. Hand embroidery takes hours of stitching. It is in this process of layering thread that she creates work that, in many ways, replicates painting. However, she uses a craft that is historically ‘decorative’ and passed down from woman to woman. Her goal is to draw people closer. For people to see what they assume is a traditional painting, lean in and think, 'Wow, that's denim and cotton thread.'
